Medical Toxicology is the science of poisons with a longer history than medicine as it commenced when the apple dropped from the tree and Adam hesitated to eat it, because he thought it might be toxic. The Medical Toxicology Research Center (MTRC) is founded November 2007, but the Medical Toxicology Center (MTC) with clinical toxicology and research laboratories, clinic and ward for the poisoned patients was opened in March 1973 in Imam Reza hospital under the Mashhad University of Medical School.
MTRC was established as one of the original multidisciplinary research centers at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in Mashhad, Iran. It is the only “Medical Toxicology” research center in Iran. The Center's mission is to facilitate multidisciplinary basic and applied research, to provide a wide range of educational programs, and to serve as a technical resource for the University, Industry and Government.
MTRC has a close collaboration with International organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), Asia Pacific Association of Medical Toxicology (APAMT) and Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). MTRC has also had joint research projects with Edinburgh and Newcastle Universities of the UK.
The location of the MTRC in the Poison Control Center of Imam Reza Hospital and the clinical and research expertise (MD, PhD) of several MTRC staff members have provided a unique opportunity to conduct “Basic and Clinical Research” in various areas of medical toxicology.
